Corey Mertes is the author of Self-Defense, his debut collection of short stories published by Cornerstone Press as part of its Legacy Series.

A native of the Chicago area, Corey received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production from the University of Southern California. He taught ballroom dance and worked in casinos as a dice dealer and a pit boss before becoming a lawyer, and then a writer.

​

Among other honors, Corey’s stories have been shortlisted for the American Fiction Short Story Award, the Tartts Fiction Award, and the Hudson Prize.

​

He lives in North Kansas City, Missouri.
